Robert Bauman
On October 3, 1980, while running for re-election, Maryland Representative Robert Bauman was charged for attempting to solicit sex from a 16-year-old male prostitute. Bauman had previously established a reputation as a staunch conservative, often criticizing the state of morality in the United States, and was a fierce opponent of gay rights. He was also married to Carol Dawson, with whom he had four children. He claimed alcoholism as a defense, denied he was gay, and rejected charges of hypocrisy. But his "rising star" status tarnished, he lost re-election. He later admitted his sexuality and wrote an autobiography, "The Gentleman from Maryland: The Conscience of a Gay Conservative," which was published in 1986.
